Book Recommendations

Sensible Shoes
This novel (and the whole series that follows) is not only a beautiful story of the spiritual journey of four very different friends, but it’s also a resource of ideas for your own growth.

The Rest of God
An engaging, artful read that will transform the way you think about Sabbath. One of the few books I’ve read twice.

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality
This is a substantive look at the often neglected connection between emotional and spiritual health. It’s a must-read for leaders and mentors.

Liturgy of the Ordinary
I really enjoyed this short book that turns a regular day, from waking to traffic jams to phone calls with a friend to the surrender of sleep, into an act of worship. It’s anything but ordinary.

Soul Keeping
John Ortberg makes the sometimes elusive idea of caring for your soul practical, relatable, and essential. This was my favorite book of 2020.

Favorite Songs
A playlist to stir your affections for Jesus and move your desire toward Him alone.
Podcasts

Fantastic, in-depth teaching out of Bridgetown Church in Portland that makes spiritual formation relevant. Some episodes are 7-minute breathers, while others are about 1 hour long, but oh-so-worth the time. I’m loving the series on Sabbath that starts at episode 295.

Emily P. Freeman’s podcast, The Next Right Thing, strikes the chord of simplicity as she calls us, in 15 minutes or less, to make our decisions out of a listening heart. Her episodes are always practical and uplifting.

Insightful interviews with some amazing authors make Restoring the Soul Podcast an absolutely worthwhile listen. The hosts are licensed Christian therapists who know what they’re talking about and how to guide a discussion.
